How to read any message in three layers
| Layer | Question | Example: “I’m tired” |
|---|---|---|
| Emotion | How do they feel? | Not sad — probably worn out, maybe wanting to vent |
| Fact | What happened? | Workload, people, health, or just the day |
| Relationship | Why tell me? | Want comfort / want advice / testing if I care |

Miss the third layer and you answer the wrong question. Someone who wants to vent does not want your five-step plan, however good it is.
Three reply strengths
Example: “I’m not really looking for anything right now”
I’m not really looking for anything right now
Light: Fair. Doesn’t mean we can’t talk, though.
Medium: Sounds less like “not looking” and more like “tired”. What happened?
Heavy: I won’t push for a reason. I just want you to know I’m not here because I had nothing better to do.
The one rule
If you would not be comfortable with the other person knowing the line was drafted, do not send it. That single test keeps you on the right side of the tool — and of the person.
